2019 Opportunities with the new House and Senate Committees

The mid-term election has resulted in a few changes here in Washington D.C. Beginning in 2019, the House will be controlled by the Democrats and the Senate will continue to be controlled by the Republicans.
As many of you know, when I started McKeon Group nearly four years ago, I established it as a bipartisan firm to help guide clients through the complexities of government. Previously, during my 22 years in Congress, I experienced House leadership under both Republican and Democrat control.

While Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, the final piece of legislation I passed was the 2015 NDAA – which is now known as the Carl Levin and Howard P. “Buck” McKeon National Defense Authorization Act. To pass this legislation, I worked with a committee of 34 Republicans and 28 Democrats, each side had their own priorities and financial challenges due to the sequester. I was able to pass the Final Congressional Bill with a 62-0 committee vote by working across the aisle with Ranking Member Adam Smith and all members of the full committee.

The last couple years, with the House and Senate under Republican leadership, have been productive years for our clients in Defense, Education and International Relations. I see 2019 and beyond as a great opportunity for our clients as well. McKeon Group currently has very strong relationships and influence with members of the Republican led Senate in addition to key Democrat and Republican committee members. We also continue to maintain our relationships with the White House and its administration.

I recently reviewed a list of members that are positioned to be part of the new Democrat led House Committee leadership and was pleased to see many of my friends there as well – Adam Smith as Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Eliot Engel as the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Nita Lowey as Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and Bobby Scott as Chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee. These are just a few friends, and the list continues throughout other committees and subcommittee chairs and members. McKeon Group continues to see the benefits of maintaining a bipartisan business approach and working with both Democrats and Republicans to help our clients succeed.
The McKeon Group will continue to focus on our core strengths, utilizing our experience, relationships and influence. We will be announcing a number of upcoming webinars and events which will address key Senate and House goals for 2019 and how to be effective in working on both sides of the aisle. We look forward to working with each of you to formulate and execute a successful strategy for 2019. If you have any questions about areas we can help, please give us a call.
