Education Policy Intern | email

Kathleen Nugent joins the McKeon Group as an Education Policy and Government Affairs Intern for the summer of 2018. As a former teacher, Kathleen brings a nuanced perspective and understanding of both local school issues as well as policy issues.

Kathleen is pursuing her Master of Public Administration through the Romney Institute of Business at Brigham Young University with an emphasis on state and federal government. Prior to her graduate work, Kathleen taught high school chemistry and general science. She taught in traditional public schools for seven years in New York and in public charter schools for five years in Utah.

During her tenure as an educator, Kathleen had the opportunity to engage with students, parents and teachers in a variety of school responsibilities. Her breadth of experience provides Kathleen a unique ability to advocate for a multitude of education-related issues.

Kathleen had the privilege of working with students from a variety of educational and cultural backgrounds. She co-taught biology with a special education teacher for six years in New York.  Kathleen’s experiences as an educator developed her passion for advocacy to ensure equity and access for all learners.

Kathleen is excited to work at the McKeon Group and to increase her knowledge and expertise of federal policy, particularly in the education realm.


Defense Policy Intern | email

James Meany is a senior at Wake Forest University majoring in Political Science and History on the pre-law track. He is originally from Wilton, Connecticut and attended Wilton public schools from kindergarten through his senior year of high school. This past Summer and Spring, James worked at two different law firms, learning the basics of corporate, real estate and municipal law.

At Wake Forest, James has worked in Alumni Outreach Departments and as the Fundraising Chair for his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He is a member of the Political Science Honor Society while and he also volunteers for campus initiatives that fundraise for cancer research and environmental protection. James spent this past Fall 2017 semester studying in Barcelona through Wake Forest University’s Barcelona Business and Global Studies program, where he was able to gain meaningful knowledge and experience about politics and economics on a global scale and experience a whole new culture and lifestyle.

At the McKeon Group, James hopes to apply his academic studies to real practice through exposure to business development and research opportunities. His responsibilities include: coverage of hill meetings and drafting corresponding memos, as well as monitoring defense policy legislation relevant to ongoing clientele operations. After finishing with the McKeon Group for the Summer, James will be transitioning to work in the Office of Senator Blumenthal where he hopes to further skills developed through his academics and extracurriculars.

Education Policy Intern | email

Mahealani Kaloi joins the McKeon Group as an Education Policy Intern for the Spring.  She is a student at Brigham Young University and is majoring in Biology. Her passion is to help all students receive quality education and help children take an interest in STEM subjects.

She was a STEM Educator at the Children’s Science Center in Fairfax, Virginia.  Mahealani loved that the job was so hands on with children. Leading field trips, conducting experiments, and holding feeding shows were some of her favorite highlights as she saw the excitement in children’s eyes and helped them create their own experiments.

Mahealani has grown up in the Northern Virginia area and loves the fast paced flow of Washington DC.  She is excited to be a part of the Education Team in the McKeon Group so that she can help all students succeed.

Education Policy Intern | email

Charlie Yeomans joins the McKeon Group this spring as an Education Policy Intern. His responsibilities in the Education Team include drafting summary reports and client memos, attending briefs and hearings on Capitol Hill, and tracking legislation.

Charlie graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in May 2017 with a B.A. in Sociology and concentration in Education Policy Studies. He spent two semesters as a research assistant in the Sociology Department, where he worked as a manual coder on protest data, and utilized Stata and Excel to analyze racial disparities in incarceration rates across America. His academic research experience also includes a fieldwork project that explored the relationship between residential identity markers and community strength in Rome, Italy. Over the past few summers, Charlie worked as an intern in the Market Research and Public Relations industries. His responsibilities included researching industry-related data, developing company tools, and various writing projects for clients.

Born and raised in Evanston, IL, this is Charlie’s first time living outside the Midwest. Charlie has always had a passion for education, and he’s excited for the opportunity to leverage the academic and professional skills he’s gained over the past four years and successfully apply them here at the McKeon Group.  

FALL 2017

Government Affairs Intern | email

Anna Pope is a government affairs intern at McKeon Group and graduated from Virginia Tech in May of 2017. Anna is from northern Virginia and attended public school in Fairfax County. During her undergraduate years, Anna served in Student Government Association, worked as a Writing Center coach, and interned at Holland & Knight, LLP.


Fall 2017 Intern | email

Bryan Yuen is a current student at Georgetown University Majoring in Government. At Georgetown, Bryan writes for the satire magazine and was elected president of the Chinese Student Alliance. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Bryan misses the weather but is excited about the opportunity to learn more about the legislative process.

Education Policy and Public Affairs Fellow | email

Danielle Duffy joins the McKeon Group as an Education Policy and Public Affairs Fellow for the summer of 2017. As a former teacher, Danielle brings a unique perspective and understanding of both classroom and local school issues as well as policy issues.

Danielle attended Brigham Young University where she studied History Education. Following her undergrad, Danielle taught high school history and economics for three years in Phoenix, Arizona. As an educator, Danielle taught three different courses dealing with the follow subjects: history, economics, and philosophy.

During her time as a teacher, Danielle taught in the International Baccalaureate program. The program allowed her to teach a wide range of students from different cultural backgrounds.

After three years of teaching, Danielle went back to school and is currently earning a Masters in Public Administration at BYU in the Romney Institute.


Public Affairs and Policy Research Intern | email

Calli Norton joins the McKeon Group for the summer of 2017 as a Public Affairs and Policy Research Intern. She is responsible for covering briefings from the Pentagon, researching public policy and completing research for a few defense clients.

Calli is currently attending West Virginia State University. She is a rising senior studying communications with a focus in public relations and a minor in political science. She will graduate in the spring of 2018.

At West Virginia State University, the public relations student-run firm is nationally acclaimed and the first of its kind in the country (established in 1991). Calli was recently promoted to be the firm director. She oversees the entire firm while also personally contacting real clients and producing effective propositions for companies who are looking improve their advertising, social media presence or branding.

Calli is a Boca Raton, Florida native. She is a student-athlete at her university. In addition to being an athlete, Calli is heavily involved in student organizations on campus. She belongs to the Student Government Association, Public Relations Student Society of America, Turning Point USA at WVSU, Young Americans for Liberty and Student Athlete Advisory Committee. She hopes to head to Washington, D.C. after graduation next spring.


Education Policy Research Intern | email

Nikaela Smith  joins the McKeon Group for the summer of 2017 as an Education Policy Research Intern. She is responsible for conducting research for clients as well as watching and writing up memos from webinars and covering hearings.

Nikaela is attending Brigham Young University-Idaho and is studying public relations.

Nikaela recently returned from serving an eighteen month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Texas and New Mexico. During that time, Nikaela spent her time serving the community and teaching others about spiritual and physical health in an effort to improve their lives. This experience provided Nikaela with the opportunity to see how poverty affects the lives and education of people living in the Southwest. This background provided Nikaela with the understanding of why education is essential to the growth of our nation and the importance education plays in overcoming life circumstances we are born into.

Nikaela was born and raised in Northern California. She is excited to be part of the McKeon Group because they care about their clients and strive for excellence in the work they are doing.
